Honoring Legends & Celebrating Lives
For many of us from Rajasthan, especially from Jodhpur or Jaipur, Irrfan Khan was more than just an actor; he was like a brother who belonged to our state. His maternal home was only a few kilometers away from mine. His loss feels intensely personal. Irrfan, you left us too soon!
From post-graduation in Maths to a Ph.D. from Harvard in Economics, authoring research papers with Nobel Laureates Paul Samuelson for Index Number and Simon Kuznets for GDP, to the hero of Emergency, becoming Kingmaker to Chandrashekhar, suggesting Liberalization which was later implemented by Dr. Manmohan Singh under PV Narasimha Rao's government, toppling Vajpayee's Government in a tea party, saving Ram Setu, crusading for Ram Mandir, and being an ultimate threat to the Gandhi family—these all fold into one character: Dr. Subramanian Swamy. He lived life on his own terms.
It's 6th February, marking the birthday of the legend Bob Marley. Through his music, he has taught us to be bold, to have our own opinions, to be optimistic, and to carry our own voice and echo. We, the lovers of his music, follow his teachings like obedient disciples.
The best part of being a writer is you create your own universe as God does. These words stuck in my mind one day while I was deep in thought. I liked it and thought that one day, when the appropriate time arrives, I would write it or maybe use it in one of my pieces. I never imagined I would use it for Stan Lee. I never thought the appropriate time would arrive in such a tragic way.
Allama Iqbal, the man who in 1904 gave us one of the most patriotic songs "Saare Jahan Se Achcha" and then in 1930 introduced the idea that laid the foundation of the Two-nation Theory, which spiritually led to the creation of Pakistan.
Tabassum Fatima Hashmi, mononymously known as Tabu, is celebrating her 47th birthday today. Born on this day in Hyderabad, she started her career at the age of 14 in the movie "Hum Naujawan." However, it was in 1996 that she truly showcased her capabilities with the film "Maachis," earning her the National Award for Best Actress. By the turn of the millennium, she delivered a powerful performance in "Astitva," a film with a deeper storyline, emotions, and characters, proving her maturity as an artist.
10th October, personally, was one of the saddest dates of my life, as I recall the news of the demise of the Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh Ji. He was in the hospital battling for his life after suffering a brain hemorrhage on 23rd September 2011, but all efforts went in vain with his death on 10th October. Today, I am still unable to fully express how I feel after seven years. I hope that by translating my poem, which I instantly wrote upon hearing the news of his death, I can convey my feelings. To be honest, I feel the same as I did seven years ago; his death deeply hurt me and many of us.
